Side Aches When Exercising
What Are Those Side Aches When I Exercise?
Do you ever notice that sometimes while exercising, you suddenly get a sharp pain on your side? Here are some possible causes and preventions of those side pains.
What and how much you drink before you run or exercise may be the cause of your side aches. Research shows that drinking a quart or more before you exercise can trigger a side ache. Drinking a cola with caffeine can cause longer lasting aches. Don’t not drink before exercising, just drink less; sip four to eight ounces before you head out the door. Begin drinking water earlier on your exercise days, so you won’t have to right away when you start out the door. Just as important, make sure you rehydrate yourself after your exercise with a full glass of water. Some experts even say that sports drinks are less likely to cause side aches.
Here is what you can do if you ever get a side pain:
- Purse your lips and breath slowly out of your mouth - Take a few paces without fully exhaling while breathing - Bend forward and tighten your stomach muscles - Poke your stomach out as far as you can while bending forward - Wear a wide belt tightly around your waist - Tightly squeeze or put pressure on the painful spot
